(Sarah from the Campus & Youth team speaking to students from Outram Secondary School)

Our Campus & Youth team has been hopping from one school to another over the past 3 weeks, spreading the word about co-operatives with the help of the wall. The schools which the wall was exhibited at include Meridien Junior CollegeOutram Secondary SchoolJurongville Secondary School and Catholic Junior CollegeWith the national day weekend approaching, it was especially enlightening for the students to learn how co-ops have been contributing to Singapore since the early 1920s.

We were at the World Council of Credit Unions conference in Denver from July 12 to July 15 with a couple of representatives from our local co-operatives. SNCF was privileged to host the dinner and when we saw that there was some food leftover, we packed them into boxes and walked the streets as one Singapore co-operative movement, passing the food to the homeless.

The national day weekend is approaching, and no one knows more about how co-operatives have done their part in helping to build Singapore than us – the co-operators. Perhaps the most well-known co-operatives in Singapore are the NTUC Social Enterprises, which at every critical juncture of our nation’s history, have played a crucial role in delivering social outcomes to answer to the needs of that time.

(Shuqun Secondary School student with one of the clients at SASCO Integrated Eldercare Centre)

One of our Campus & Youth team's newest initiatives is to get youths involved in volunteer work with co-operatives through our Community Outreach Programme. Yesterday afternoon, we accompanied a group of students from Shuqun Secondary School to SASCO Integrated Eldercare Centre in West Coast.

The girls were a little hesitant at first but after an ice-breaker session of musical "passing the ball", they became more confident and were actively singing songs and playing games with the old folks.

When their teacher Ms Thila said it was time to go, she was met with a round of "Nooos" from the girls. They were enjoying themselves so much that thought they had lost all track of time!

From the smiles on the faces of the elderly there, we could tell they were happy with the visit as well. It definitely won't be the last time the girls pay a visit to the centre.

The SASCO Integrated Eldercare Centre was set up on 11 April 2015 to offer a suite of services for the elderly such as dementia care and community rehabilitation. The suite of services include assistance with showering and eating as well as nursing care. Depending on their needs, the elderly clients will also have personalised care plans designed by the centre to improve their functional abilities.

At the heart of every co-operative is the motivation to do good for the community. SASCO is one such co-operative. To find out more, do visit http://www.sasco.org.sg/.
